The organization was closing its books in 18 business days each month. Reporting depended on tribal knowledge held by two long-tenured staff, ownership of key reconciliations was unclear, and department heads received financial statements too late in the month to act on them. When either staff member was out, close slipped by another three to five days. The finance team was in permanent fire-drill mode and department leaders had stopped treating the monthly statements as an operating tool.
